I’m surprised I’m the first to say something here, about this pistol…
My first impression after un-boxing was awe…. especially at how light it was!! It’s design was simple, yet aesthetically pleasing. This was my first AR platform that used a side charging BCG, Working it at first took a little getting used to. If you’re used to that it won’t be a factor. The ergo grip is good, but a little small for me…then again I have big friggin’ hands and most ergo grips are small to me.
Out at the range I put 100 rds of XM193 through her and she performed without a hiccup. Groupings were pretty tight out to 25 yds. Single handed shooting, 3 rds (4 secs), out to 10 yds were all center mass. The lack of recoil was phenomenal!
One major draw back is the muzzle flash. I’ve read other reviews where this is mentioned as well. It was like a mini star flashing before my eyes 🙂 I was at an indoor range, just to mention. Outdoor might be a different animal. But part of my decision to get this was to maybe suggest it to my special teams guys. With that flash I can’t see this being used as an entry tool. If the compensator was somehow redesigned to minimize, without sacrificing minimum recoil, it that would be a major plus.
Overall it was one hell of a fun pistol to shoot. I don’t regret the purchase one bit!

I am an FFL in SE Wisconsin and have sold quite a few of these. My customers LOVE them. Fun to shoot, literally no recoil and easy cleaning. You MUST use 5.56 NATO in these. I have had a large amount of customers bringing them back claiming they do not cycle properly. After my own testing, I have found they do not operate well with any .223 ammo. 5.56 of any brand ran through the 30 round and 100 round drums without a single a short or jam. For the $$ these are a very nice toy.

Thanks for the review. For the record it is chambered in 5.56mm and is called the EXP-556. Its designed to shoot 5.56mm ammo not .223 🙂

Thanks Extar for a great gun. I had a minimum hiccup with my gun and it was promptly taken care of. There was never a safety issue as it was designed with excellent engineering. Thanks for taking care of my pistol and buy American has never shined as well as your company. Thank you!

Placed my order online and it took less than three days (over a weekend) to get to my FFL….across country. Great!
Took it home and after cleaning and parts familiarity fired 5 rounds into the woods behind my house.
    Great again.
Took it to the range the next day and first shot on a target 10 yds away was dead center. Still great! Put 100 shots through it with not a hiccup or burp. Fired flawlessly and dead on accurate…I do not shoot my handguns as well as the Extar 556 performed.
Moved target to 25 yds. 30 rounds into the black silhouette. No problem with the Extar…my old eyes and arms were getting tired.
I am extremely impressed with this weapon. After cleaning it now resides in my truck….well for a short while because I want to get to the range again soon.
Great Job Extar and New Frontier.

    :

Excellent pistol! Shoots well; groups are tight; zero jams zero mis-feeds. Wasn’t sure what to think at first but had to give it a try and glad I did. Can’t wait to purchase another just for the fun of shooting!

    :

I bought mine when they first came out. No problems so far. Do not attempt to shoot this gun without hearing protection. The muzzle blast and concussion is like a bomb going off in front of you. The lack of recoil is amazing. It has never jammed. I use brass and steel case Tula ammo.

    :

I have a number of AR’s and I have to say this is my favorite one to shoot. It is incredibly light, has little to no recoil and even minimal muzzle rise. I had concerns about the polymer having heat related issues or becoming brittle, but none of those concerns were founded. This is also the ultimate 3 day bag pistol being both powerful and lightweight and to get a pistol this small without a buffer tube for $449 is an incredible deal!

    :

I gave bought 2 Extar 556 pistols, first one I do kid after about 5k rounds and got $125 more than I paid fir it. Sold it when after being on waiting list over 1yr they said it was bardic slyly same gun but it had a full length piccatiny rail goes to frt sight. It’s still finicky a few FTF’s but expected thru break in time. I shoot 250-300 rds before comfortable. My old one shot .223’s but not the new one. On waiting list for another one

I bought one of the Extar pistols a few years ago and it really impressed me with its light weight, how simple it was to clean and especially how accurate it is. I can wear out a steel gong at 100 yards. Ten round mags make it really sweet to carry.
